2011 Doomben Cup Form Guide

May 19th, 2011

The 2011 Doomben Cup will once again be a very popular contest with ten horses lining up to take it on in 2011.

The $500,000 Group 1 goes over a 2020m trip and will jump at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday May 21st.

There’s a long list of talent in the race with just about every runner a real winning chance but the horse they must all defeat is My Kingdom Of Fife.

He’s unbeaten since coming to Australia and in his last run on the Gold Coast he accounted for the vast majority of the main players here.

His biggest threat is probably from the horse that finished second in that race Glass Harmonium.

It was his first run in Australia and he performed well above expectations, he will have improved from the run so he’s worth a big look.

Third in that race was Scenic Shot and he wasn’t far away either so be sure to check him out.

He’s eight-years-old but still going strong and will hit the line the hardest of the lot.

The horses they will chase are Zavite and Shadows In The Sun, both at opposite ends of their careers but both capable of catching them napping if they’re not careful.

Throw into the mix the underrated kiwi The Hombre and it’s a very interesting race and one you have to get involved with.

2011 Doomben Cup Form Guide

#1 – Scenic Shot (Barrier – 2) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: Daniel Morton
  • Jockey: Shane Scriven
  • Career Stats: 64s – 16w – 13p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Gold Coast

Gallant veteran who is showing no signs of slowing up just yet. Third last start behind My Kingdom Of Fife and not too far away. He’s a good chance and will position nicely from two.

#2 – Zavite (Barrier – 6) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Chris Munce
  • Career Stats: 62s – 11w – 9p
  • Last Start: 9th at Randwick

Another ageing champ who proved in the Ranvet he still has a result in him. Short straight of Doomben will help him, no secrets about his game plan, he’ll take the lead.

#3 – Triple Honour (Barrier – 7) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Larry Cassidy
  • Career Stats: 43s – 7w – 11p
  • Last Start: 6th at Gold Coast

Disappointing in his last few runs after running a gallant third in the TJ Smith behind Black Caviar. At his best he’s in it but he was nearly four lengths off them last start.

#4 – Vision And Power (Barrier –9) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: Jo Pride
  • Jockey: Jim Cassidy
  • Career Stats: 65s – 10w – 11p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Canterbury

Trainer has showed plenty of faith when he looked well past it but a third last start gives some hope. Was still three off Shootoof in that run though so probably place at best.

#5 – Shoot Out (Barrier – 3) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: John Wallace
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 22s – 7w – 5p
  • Last Start: 5th at Gold Coast

This horse keeps frustrating punters in 2011 after promising so much but yet to even run a place. Once again his chance are being spruiked, distance could finally be to his liking.

#6 – My Kingdom Of Fife (Barrier – 5) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: Chris Waller
  • Jockey: Dwayne Dunn
  • Career Stats: 22s – 6w – 8p
  • Last Start: 1st at Gold Coast

Here’s the favourite and with good reason, unbeaten from three in Australia and he beat most of this field last start. Still offers surprising value, no reason he won’t be winning again.

#7 – Glass Harmonium (Barrier – 4) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Hugh Bowman
  • Career Stats: 13s – 3w – 3p
  • Last Start: 2nd at Gold Coast

Came close to MKOF last start in what was his first Aussie run. Before that he started in the Hong Kong Cup so this horse has class. With a run to his credit he may be hard to beat.

#8 – The Hombre (Barrier – 10) (59kgs)

  • Trainer: John Bary
  • Jockey: Jonathon Riddell
  • Career Stats: 20s – 4w – 8p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Te Rapa

Been running well in NZ this year and is no stranger to success in Australia. He’s fit and eager and on his day he could really give this a shake..

#9 – Shadows In The Sun (Barrier – 1) (55.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Tim Clark
  • Career Stats: 18s – 3w – 3p
  • Last Start: 1st at Morphettville

Comes here from a different prep after winning the SA Derby. Was a solid win but the class is much higher at Doomben. Still, he’ll do to the front and take some chasing.

#10 – Shootoff (Barrier – 8) (55.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Graeme Rogerson
  • Jockey: Michael Rodd
  • Career Stats: 15s – 3w – 2p
  • Last Start: 1st at Canterbury

Has won two on the trot and in career best form without a doubt. He’ll still need to improve but he’s taken a lot of early support from punters.
