Doomben Racecourse will come alive this Saturday when the picturesque track hosts their third and final race meeting of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 Day.
Three quality Group races are programmed for the day, including race six, the $125,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m).
The highly anticipated handicap event has attracted a capacity field this year, which includes an incredible 11 Kiwi-bred runners in the 16 confirmed starters, and four of the five emergencies are also from New Zealand.
Last start winner of the Chairman’s Handicap, Crossthestart, is one of the top chances in the Premier’s Cup
The highest rated Kiwi hopeful is last start winner of the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2020m), Crossthestart.
The Bevan and Richard Laming-trained five-year-old Cape Cross gelding has drawn barrier eight for Saturday and is sure to start as one of the favourites.
The horse that ran second to Crossthestart in the Chairman’s Handicap, Larry’s Never Late, has had their chances of revenge shattered with a wide barrier 20 draw in the Premier’s Cup.
Horses that have drawn ideally for Saturday include the Michael Moroney-trained Tinseltown having their maiden Australian run for the season in barrier two, and Robert Heathcote’s local Honours List gelding Tabulate in barrier three.
Also worth keeping an eye on are dual Warrnambool Cup winner Hissing Sid hoping to make his way into the 2010 Melbourne Cup field, and veteran Montjeu gelding Fulmonti appearing in his 61st career race.
