Waller Wins 2010 Doomben Cup with Favourite Metal Bender

May 24th, 2010

In an intense and entertaining finish in the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) at Doomben racecourse on Saturday, the Chris Waller-trained favourite Metal Bender pulled out a final burst of acceleration to bound home and secure back-to-back black type success.

A four-year-old Danasinga gelding, Metal Bender entered the betting as the favourite with Ladbrokes.com.au following his last start win in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m). But after Kiwi raider Sir Time Keeper exploded from barrier two in the 2010 Doomben Cup, gaining a huge early lead, the odds-on favourite looked outrun.

Sir Time Keeper couldn’t maintain his fast early pace however and soon faded to finish a well beaten 10th. Inside the 600m it was Gai Waterhouse’s consistent Choisir mare Gold Water who was the most impressive, moving up to secure the lead.

Running strongly to the line Gold Water stayed in front while the rest of the field continued to change positions inside the last 60 metres. Then, with only a few strides to go Metal Bender ($3.20) gave it his all and jostled home, defeating Gold Water ($31) by a head.

Waller’s other Doomben Cup starter Triple Honour ($12) ran an eye-catching third crossing the line just a short-half-head further away, while the Anthony Cummings-trained second favourite, Road To Rock ($3.70) was two lengths back in fourth in his final career race before heading to stud.

Metal Bender will now be spelled before the spring, Saturday’s win being his seventh from 13 starts and elevating his prizemoney to an impressive $1,365,400.

It was a sensational day at Doomben for Rosehill-based trainer Chris Waller

It was a sensational day at Doomben for Rosehill-based trainer Chris Waller. Not only did he train two of the top three in the Cup, he also had two more Group winners at the meeting with exciting Fastnet Rock colt Stryker taking out the $125,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) and up-and-coming two-year-old Pressday securing victory in the $150,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).
